The governments of the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have announced the recognition of Palestine as an independent state, saying the step would help advance peace talks between Palestinians and Israelis.

The announcement, which comes just hours before the United Nations General Assembly convenes in New York, is aimed at reviving peace negotiations between Israel and Palestine under the stalled two-state solution framework.

Starmer: UK Officially Recognizes Palestine

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was the first to make the declaration, telling reporters that the move was intended to restore momentum to the peace process.

“Today, to help restore the peace process and advance the two-state solution, the United Kingdom officially recognizes the State of Palestine,” Starmer said in a statement.

Canada, Australia Follow in Quick Succession

Within hours, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the decision in a post on his official X handle.

“Canada recognizes the State of Palestine, and we extend our support to efforts that can bring lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis,” he wrote.

Australia also announced its recognition later the same day, marking a rare coordinated move among three Western allies.

Global Implications Ahead of UNGA

The joint recognition aligns the three nations with a growing list of countries that have formally backed Palestinian statehood in recent months. Analysts say the timing, coming just before the UN General Assembly opens on Monday, is designed to send a powerful diplomatic signal.

The decision is expected to intensify pressure on Israel and its allies, particularly the United States, to reconsider their stance on the two-state solution, long described as the only viable path to ending the decades-old conflict.
