Tinubu Deploys Minister To Kebbi To Rescue 24 Abducted Schoolgirls

President Bola Tinubu has ordered Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, to relocate to Kebbi State to oversee rescue efforts for 24 schoolgirls abducted earlier this week.

The presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the directive in a statement on Thursday, highlighting that Matawalle would remain in Kebbi to supervise security operations until the students are safely returned.

The Minister of State for Defence brings with him prior experience handling similar crises, having served as governor of Zamfara State from 2019 to 2023, where he successfully managed the release of 279 kidnapped female students in Jangebe in 2021.

Officials said Matawalle is expected to arrive in Birni-Kebbi on Friday to coordinate with federal and state security agencies, leveraging his expertise in combating banditry and negotiating with kidnappers to ensure a swift resolution.

Security sources confirmed that armed men abducted 24 students from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga town at about 4 a.m. on Monday, prompting an immediate federal response.

The Presidency noted that Matawalle’s prior success in negotiating hostage releases will be critical in the current operation, stressing that his deployment aims to combine tactical security measures with strategic engagement to free the abducted girls.

Security agencies in Kebbi State have been directed to cooperate fully with Matawalle, ensuring seamless coordination among federal, state, and local authorities throughout the rescue mission.

Community leaders in Maga town expressed cautious optimism, calling on government authorities to act swiftly and ensure the safe return of all the kidnapped students.

The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting schoolchildren and citizens nationwide, promising robust measures to address banditry and mass abductions across Nigeria.

Matawalle’s assignment in Kebbi is expected to last until the completion of the rescue operation, with the Presidency closely monitoring the progress and providing additional resources where necessary.

The deployment underscores the government’s determination to tackle insecurity and demonstrates reliance on experienced officials with proven track records in handling similar emergencies.
