Tinubu Convenes Emergency Council of State, Police Council Meetings

President Bola Tinubu has conveyed an emergency meeting of the Council of State and the Police Council for Thursday, October 9, 2025, amid growing insecurity across several parts of the country.

The high-level meetings, scheduled for the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, are aimed at reviewing Nigeria’s security situation and strengthening national coordination on emerging threats.

National Security Tops Agenda

In a statement released on Monday by the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs Office, Dr. Emanso Umobong and signed on behalf of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, all members of both councils have been officially invited to attend either physically or virtually.

The statement noted that the Council of State will convene at 1:00 p.m., while the Police Council will follow at 2:00 p.m. The agenda includes critical discussions on national security, policing reforms, and key administrative matters.

Who Makes Up the Council

The Council of State, chaired by the President, includes former Presidents and Heads of State, former Chief Justices of Nigeria, serving state governors, and the Attorney-General of the Federation. It serves as an advisory body on vital national policies, particularly those related to security, governance, and appointments.

The Police Council, meanwhile, is responsible for the overall administration, organisation, and discipline of the Nigeria Police Force, as well as the appointment of senior officers.

Security, INEC Leadership on the Table

Presidency insiders told News Alert Nigeria that the meetings will assess the nation’s security operations, evaluate progress in the fight against banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping, and consider new measures to tackle violence in parts of the North-West, North-Central, and other flashpoints.

Also expected on the agenda is the nomination of a new Chairman for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the expiration of the incumbent’s tenure.

Tinubu Returns From 10-Day Lagos Working Visit

The meetings come just hours after President Tinubu’s return to Abuja on Monday evening, following a 10-day working visit to Lagos, where he engaged with investors, development partners, and political stakeholders.

His aircraft, a San Marino-registered Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) T7-NAS, touched down at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 6:55 p.m., according to the State House media office.

Renewed Push for Security Coordination

Thursday’s Council of State session will be the second under Tinubu’s administration, and is expected to set the tone for enhanced intergovernmental coordination in tackling the nation’s complex security challenges.

The presidency has described the meetings as “strategic consultations to realign Nigeria’s security priorities and restore citizens’ confidence.”
