Taye Currency Blasted for Controversial Lyrics at Oba Ladoja’s Coronation

Nigerians have taken to social media to condemn popular fuji musician Taye Currency over the lyrics he rendered during the coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja (Arusa I) as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The monarch was officially crowned on Friday at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, in a colourful ceremony attended by dignitaries, including President Bola Tinubu, Governor Seyi Makinde, Governor Biodun Oyebanji, Governor Ademola Adeleke, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Minister Bayo Adelabu, and top Yoruba traditional rulers.
Taye Currency, who was invited as the guest performer, drew heavy criticism for singing the line:
“Were la fi n wo were”, a Yoruba phrase meaning “we used insanity to cure insanity.”
The lyrics, deemed inappropriate for the cultural and historic event, quickly went viral and pushed the musician into the top trends on X (formerly Twitter).
The installation of Oba Ladoja came barely two months after the death of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the late Olubadan.

The controversy has since overshadowed the ceremony itself, sparking debate over the choice of entertainers at major Yoruba traditional events.
