Ladoja and the Beauty of Ibadan Obaship Tradition

When I reflect on the unique tradition of the Ibadan Obaship system, the person who first made me fall in love with it is none other than Oba Ladoja.
When he was unjustly impeached as Governor and later denied a second term chance, I got to know he was already a High Chief and could one day become the Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The Ibadan system is unlike any other in Yorubaland. There are no rulling houses or exclusive family rights. Once a man becomes Mogaji of his family, he enters the succession line.
There is no need for political backing, no Ifa manipulation and no fierce lobbying. The process is structured and transparent. All that is required is steady progression and the gift of long life.
This model gives dignity to the stool and promotes fairness. It also explains why the Ibadan monarchy has enjoyed relative peace compared to other Yoruba towns where succession battles often divide families.
History has fulfilled itself today, Oba Ladoja has ascended the revered throne of Olubadan. His coronation is not just a personal triumph but also a testament to the beauty of a system built on patience and experience.
I say congratulations to His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Sen) Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja (Arusa 1), the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. May his reign be peaceful and prosperous for Ibadanland.
