The race for the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State gathered fresh momentum on Wednesday as Governor Biodun Oyebanji submitted his nomination form at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretariat, drawing what observers described as overwhelming support from party stalwarts.

In a swift reaction, the Chairman of Ajoni Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Prince (Amb.) Michael Ogungbemi, hailed the governor’s outing as “impressive,” declaring that Oyebanji’s challengers “only exist on social media” and lack the political structure to threaten his re-election chances.

Ogungbemi, in a congratulatory statement after the submission ceremony at the Muhammadu Buhari House in Abuja, said the massive presence of APC leaders was a clear sign that Oyebanji already enjoys strong backing ahead of the party’s governorship primary scheduled for October 27, 2025.

“The barrage of attacks being hurled at the governor recently do not in any way suggest waning popularity or party rejection,” he said.

“Opposition Only on Social Media”

Ogungbemi dismissed criticisms targeted at the governor, insisting that they come from political lightweights without real grassroots influence.

“The governor’s adversaries are only visible on social media. They have no real political base or support system to challenge his candidature effectively,” he declared.

He further predicted that Oyebanji would coast to a landslide victory in the June 20, 2026 governorship election, citing his achievements and style of leadership.

“Outstanding Among His Peers”

The council boss praised Oyebanji as one of Nigeria’s most effective governors, pointing to his record across key sectors.

“Among the 36 state governors, Governor Oyebanji stands out in terms of performance. His record is impressive across key sectors like education, infrastructure, workers’ welfare, and youth empowerment,” he noted.

Ogungbemi listed flagship projects including the Ado-Ekiti Flyover, the Ekiti Cargo International Airport, the introduction of free education, prompt wage payments, and the creation of over 20,000 youth jobs in formal and informal sectors.

“A Servant-Leader Committed to Democracy”

He also praised Oyebanji’s inclusive governance style, stressing his respect for internal party democracy and grassroots involvement.

“Governor Oyebanji has handed power to the people. The screening and appointment of commissioners were done with input from local leaders, showing deep respect for party structures and grassroots representation,” he said.

On financial prudence, Ogungbemi described Oyebanji as transparent and disciplined, executing capital-intensive projects without plunging Ekiti into unsustainable debts.

“His austere lifestyle and financial discipline have enabled him to deliver magnificent projects without overburdening the state with unnecessary loans,” he added.

“Victory Already Secured”

Confident of the governor’s chances, Ogungbemi insisted that Ekiti voters would reward Oyebanji’s leadership at the ballot box.

“Across the six pillars of his administration, Governor Oyebanji has proven himself a competent and trusted leader. The attacks from the opposition will not dent his popularity or chances. Victory is already secured through his noble actions,” he concluded.
