Ekiti Speaker Aribasoye Reaffirms Auditors’ Role in Strengthening Public Accountability

The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, has stressed the vital role of auditors in promoting transparency and accountability across public institutions.

The Speaker said auditors occupy a strategic position in shaping sound financial systems and ensuring effective management of public resources.

Aribasoye made the call while addressing participants at the Audit Training and Workshop organised by the Ekiti State Audit Service Commission in Ado-Ekiti.

The event, themed “Audit Service Law in Retrospect: Operationalizing the Provisions for Effective Personnel Management,” brought together auditing professionals from across the state.

According to a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Babajide Agbeyo, the Speaker, who spent 14 of his 17 years in public service at the Office of the State Auditor-General, urged auditors to carry out their duties independently and without interference.

“Your work should not be dictated to you. You must assert and exercise your independence,” Aribasoye said, warning against the practice of post-mortem auditing, where reviews are conducted only after financial decisions have been made.

He encouraged participants to uphold ethics, courage, and competence, stressing that synergy among auditing offices is essential for efficiency and credibility.

Aribasoye also advocated technology-driven auditing, calling for a paperless approach and the adoption of ICT tools for fraud detection and performance tracking.

He further emphasised the need for cooperation between the Office of the Auditor-General and the Audit Service Commission, urging professionals to avoid ego clashes and embrace practices that uphold integrity and public confidence.

At the feedback session, participants pledged to apply the lessons learned, strengthen professional ethics, and maintain objectivity in the audit process.
