Ekiti Govt Distributes Mobility Aids As Blind Community Marks 2025 White Cane Day

Ekiti State government on Wednesday distributed mobility aids to members of the blind community as part of the 2025 International White Cane and Safety Day celebrations, aimed at promoting independence, safety, and dignity.

The event, held around the Fajuyi area of Ado-Ekiti, attracted members of the blind community, caregivers, disability advocates, and government officials, highlighting the state’s commitment to inclusive policies.

Princess Adetoun Agboola, Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Education and Social Inclusion, said the annual White Cane Day serves as a symbolic reminder of the rights, mobility needs, and dignity of visually impaired persons.

She assured that Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration would continue to support persons with disabilities through job placements, economic empowerment schemes, and social welfare initiatives.

The Special Adviser congratulated association members who recently gained government employment and noted that these initiatives reflect the administration’s commitment to social inclusion and empowerment.

Princess Agboola urged members of the blind community to maintain good conduct in public, emphasizing that demonstrating responsibility and unity would strengthen public trust and enhance collaboration with the government.

She also advised the Ekiti Blind Association leadership to work closely with the national body to ensure transparency, accountability, and effective coordination in serving the needs of its members.

Highlighting the success of the blind community, she said disability does not mean inability, noting that members had achieved personal and professional success despite challenges.

Mr. Gboyega Afolabi, Chairman of the event’s planning committee, praised the state government’s interventions, including mobility support, business grants, and job placements, which have increased confidence among members of the blind community.

A major highlight of the day was the distribution of free white canes to members whose mobility aids were worn out or who did not have any, reinforcing the importance of independent movement and safety.

Beneficiaries, including Mr. Ibrahim Olajide and Ms. Precious Agboola, expressed appreciation to Governor Oyebanji, describing the support as life-changing and a demonstration of the government’s commitment to persons with disabilities.
