Doctor Admits Leaving Patient Under Anaesthetic for Sexual Encounter with Nurse

A British medical tribunal has heard shocking details of how a consultant anaesthetist at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester allegedly left a patient under anaesthetic during surgery to engage in sexual activity with a nurse in a nearby theatre.
According to testimony before the tribunal, Dr. Suhail Anjum asked for a “comfort break” in the middle of an operation, leaving a colleague to monitor the unconscious patient. Instead of resting, he allegedly went to meet Nurse C, where they were discovered in a “compromising position” by another staff member, who immediately reported the incident.
Representing the General Medical Council (GMC), Andrew Molloy confirmed that the patient suffered no harm during Dr. Anjum’s absence and the surgical procedure was completed without complications.
Dr. Anjum has admitted the allegations and expressed deep remorse.
“It was quite shameful, to say the least. I only have myself to blame,” he told the tribunal.
“I offer my sincere apologies to everyone involved and I want the opportunity to put this right.”
The consultant anaesthetist explained that the incident occurred during a particularly “stressful time” in his family life.
The tribunal will now decide whether Dr. Anjum’s conduct amounts to serious professional misconduct, which could lead to suspension or removal from the medical register.
