Nigeria’s political landscape is in shock following the passing of Chief Audu Ogbeh, a respected elder statesman, former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and ex-minister of agriculture.

News Alert reported that Ogbeh died peacefully on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at the age of 78. His death marks the end of a remarkable career in public service that spanned more than four decades.

Family Confirms Audu Ogbeh’s Death
In a statement signed by his family, Ogbeh was described as “a man of integrity, service and dedication to Nigeria’s progress.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather; Chief Audu Ogbeh. He passed away on the 9th of August 2025 at the fulfilled age of 78.

Audu Ogbeh’s Political Journey
Chief Audu Ogbeh’s political journey began in 1979 when he was elected into the Benue State House of Assembly. He quickly rose to become Deputy Speaker, a role he held until 1982.

“He departed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, service, and dedication to our nation and community. We are comforted by the many lives he touched and the example he set.

“Details of the funeral arrangements will be announced soon. We thank friends, colleagues, and well-wishers for their prayers and support, and we request privacy at this time,” the statement read.

In the same year, he was appointed Minister of Communications under the Shehu Shagari administration, serving until 1983.

Decades later, he returned to national prominence as Minister of Agriculture from 2015 to 2019 under President Muhammadu Buhari, where he championed agricultural reforms and food security policies.

Tributes Pour In
Prominent Nigerians, political allies, and former colleagues have begun paying tribute to Ogbeh, describing him as “a patriot who believed in Nigeria’s unity” and “a voice of wisdom in troubled times.”

Funeral details will be made public in the coming days as the nation prepares to honour one of its political icons.
