Benin Detains Soldiers After Foiled Coup Broadcast

Benin authorities have taken several soldiers into custody after a failed attempt to overthrow President Patrice Talon on Sunday.
Fresh information from security sources indicates that about 13 suspects have been picked up, with all but one identified as active-duty soldiers. The remaining detainee is said to be a retired member of the armed forces.
Earlier on Sunday, a group of uniformed officers appeared on Benin’s national television, where they announced the removal of President Talon and declared the dissolution of national institutions. The self-styled group introduced itself as the Military Committee for Refoundation and claimed it had seized control of the state.
According to the presidency, the broadcast did not reflect the true situation on ground, as loyal troops immediately moved to contain the disturbance. Officials said President Talon was safe and security agencies were working to stabilise the situation.
“The individuals involved are only a small faction with limited reach. They held the television briefly, but the national army is back in control. The city and the entire country remain secure,” the presidency assured.
Authorities are continuing investigations as troops maintain order across strategic points in the capital.
