Okemesi/Ido-Ile LCDA Trains Food Vendors on Hygiene, Public Health

The Okemesi/Ido-Ile Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Ekiti State has organized a comprehensive training program for food vendors and handlers to promote food safety, hygiene and public health across the council.

The event, held on Thursday at Okemesi Town Hall, drew participants from the Okemesi and Ido-Ile communities and was aimed at strengthening public health while supporting small businesses that play a critical role in the local economy.

Declaring the training open, the Executive Chairman of the council, Hon. Ajibade Sunday Owolabi, emphasized the importance of food safety as a foundation for public trust and business growth.

“Food safety begins with each individual vendor. Hygiene starts with proper handwashing, clean utensils, appropriate attire, and correct food storage. Proper waste disposal keeps our streets clean and healthy. This training is not a one-off; it is the beginning of a sustained partnership with our environmental department,” Ajibade said.

He further assured participants of continuous mentorship, inspections, and resources to help them improve record-keeping, secure licenses, and formalize their operations.

Training Highlights

The training covered a wide range of areas, including food safety standards, personal hygiene, sanitary procedures, safe food handling and temperature control, waste management and street cleanliness, licensing and documentation, business sustainability, proper handwashing techniques, and correct use of disposal bins, with practical demonstrations provided to ensure full understanding.

Health Screening and Certificates

In addition to the training, participants received free health checks for malaria and blood sugar levels, alongside free medications and health tips from medical experts.

At the close of the program, attendees were awarded certificates of participation and given guidance on continued mentorship and future training opportunities.
