National Youth Games: Ekiti stun Lagos to win basketball gold in Asaba

Team Ekiti on Thursday clinched gold in the male basketball event at the ongoing National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, Delta state.

In a tightly contested final, Ekiti edged past Team Lagos 19–18 to secure the top prize. Both sides displayed grit and skill, but Ekiti showed greater resilience in the closing moments to seal victory.

News Alert reports that Adetayo Awojinrin, coach of the Ekiti basketball team praised the players for their fighting spirit.
“I am happy God crowned our efforts with success. Despite tough matches in the group stage, we managed to defeat Lagos in the final,” he said. “I believe this win will inspire the boys to go for more gold medals.”

More medals for Ekiti

Beyond basketball, Team Ekiti also recorded wins in other categories.

In Kungfu, Funbi Adedoyin claimed bronze in the 48kg female category. State head coach Ronke Raji lauded her resilience against stiff opposition.

Para-athlete Suleiman Abdulazeez bagged gold in discus and silver in shot put, further boosting the state’s medal haul.

Three Ekiti athletes Abdulazeez Suleiman (para-athletics), Precious Ayodele (Ayo Olopon), and Damilola Oni (cricket) have also been invited by their respective national federations for exceptional performances at the games.

Medal table boost

With Thursday’s achievements, Team Ekiti now has two gold, three silver, and three bronze medals, consolidating its place among the top-performing states at the Asaba 2025 games.
