Tinubu Reacts to Abuja–Kaduna Train Derailment, Assures Swift Action

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed concern over Tuesday’s derailment of a passenger train on the Abuja–Kaduna corridor, pledging immediate support for affected passengers and fresh measures to avert future accidents.

In a statement released on his official X handle while on an official engagement in Brazil, Tinubu described the derailment as distressing and extended prayers to passengers and their families.

“I am deeply saddened by this incident. My heartfelt prayers are with the injured, their families, and all passengers who experienced this distressing event,” the president stated.

He confirmed that he is receiving constant updates on the situation and awaits a full briefing from relevant authorities.

“I remain fully briefed on the developments and expect swift measures to support those affected. The NRC is actively addressing the situation, and necessary steps will be taken to prevent a recurrence,” Tinubu assured.

NRC Confirms All Passengers Safe

The derailment occurred around 11:09 a.m. near kilometre 49, between Kubwa and Asham stations, leaving several coaches overturned.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that no lives were lost, and that all passengers are being safely evacuated, with emergency response teams and security operatives deployed to the scene.

A Corridor Under Scrutiny

The Abuja–Kaduna rail line, one of Nigeria’s busiest passenger routes, continues to face repeated operational and security challenges.

In May 2024, a train derailed near Jere in Kaduna State, stranding passengers.
In March 2022, terrorists attacked a Kaduna-bound train with explosives and gunfire, killing at least eight passengers and abducting over 160 others.

Though services resumed after months of suspension, the latest incident has reignited concerns about rail safety, infrastructure maintenance, and passenger protection.
