Osun PDP Cautions Police Against Bias Ahead of 2026 Governorship Election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has urged the Nigeria Police to remain impartial ahead of the 2026 governorship election, warning against what it described as selective arrests and political bias in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement released on Monday in Osogbo, the State PDP Chairman, Hon. Sunday Bisi, commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Osun State Commissioner of Police for their efforts in maintaining order but expressed concern over what he called a growing pattern of intimidation and selective arrests of PDP members.

Bisi alleged that some police officers were showing undue preference to petitions from members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while similar complaints from PDP supporters were either ignored or delayed.

He further claimed that, in some instances, police personnel acted as complainants on behalf of APC petitioners rather than serving as neutral investigators.

“Instead of summoning both parties, the Police have at times assumed the role of complainant against detained PDP members and initiated court actions,” the statement read.

The PDP also raised alarm over alleged directives from the Force Headquarters in Abuja ordering the arrest and transfer of PDP members to the Federal Capital Territory for detention or prosecution, noting that over four such cases had been recorded in the past two weeks.

While reaffirming its confidence in the leadership of the IGP and the Osun Police Command, the party urged swift action to prevent political tension as the 2026 polls draw nearer.

“We believe the Inspector-General and the Commissioner of Police remain committed to fairness and professionalism. These incidents may be isolated or linked to actions of overzealous junior officers, but they must be addressed promptly,” the statement said.

The PDP urged the Police to ensure equal treatment of all political parties and to resist any attempt to use the force for partisan purposes.

“It is too early for Osun to be drawn into unnecessary political crises. We urge the Police to maintain impartiality in the interest of peace, justice, and credible elections,” the party concluded.
